TYLER FERNENGEL GETS NECK SURGERY!
CM: What’s up with the recent neck surgery? It sounds brutal!!
TF: Yeah, so basically I’ve been battling this same injury for about two years now. Obviously not knowing the severity of it. I was just getting cortisone shots in my spine and just riding it out for however long that could last. But it never fixed anything, hence why you haven’t seen much from me recently. I’ve been keeping it on the down low, but it was finally time to get this fixed once and for all. I got some new MRIs a few weeks ago only to find out I had one completely ruptured disc. It was basically blown to pieces. Thanks to RedBull I’m working with one of the best spine surgeons in the world and we ended up doing a full disc replacement which is an artificial disc they have molded. Pretty crazy, but the success rate is almost always 100%.
CM: How long have you been suffering this injury for?
TF: This has been going on since I was about 19 and I just turned 22. It has been a rough one for me obviously physically but more mentally because I haven’t been able to do what I love and create new things on and off my bike.
CM: When do you expect to be riding again?
TF: I should be able to start rolling around here in like 4 weeks, but total recovery time is 10-12 weeks. Which isn’t really that bad, considering it was spine surgery and I’ve already taken months off because of this injury. I’ll be back very soon.
CM: Have you lost any of your armor? Do you still plan on being as crazy on your bike as you’ve shown in the past?
TF: I don’t think so. That’s me, that’s the way I like to live my life on and off the bike. It will obviously take me a bit to gain all of my confidence back, but the doc says I’ll be stronger than I was before as long as I take care of myself in the healing time. I’m ready to get back to what I was put here to do. All positive from here on out.
Also, I wanted to say thanks to everybody at Vans and Red Bull for supporting me through this and having my back. – All love, Tyler
